Another week, another inspiration thanks to the Facebook post. This one is from a friend who posted a blog entry his friend wrote.
The topic has to do with world events and the importance of knowing when to go. Phrases like these undoubtedly draw comparisons to gambling.
More important than knowing when to hit 17 or betting on red is understanding when to go. I read it about a dozen times and ended up just saying, “Huh?”

If the dealer has bust cards (2-6), you stick around and let him bust. If the dealer has a good hand (7-10 / Face or Ace), then you can’t rely on him, and you should take risks and try to improve your hand.
So, you hit.
A lot of people have doubts about the number 16 but just because they hate going broke and there’s a good chance that you will. Insert 7 as the dealer’s up card and the selection gets harder, but hitting is still an obvious strategy. The dealer will win straight away with 5 out of 13 cards and still have plenty of chances to win with the others. Yes, of course there will be times when he will go broke with a 7 up. But, as usual, you play the odds.
If the blog writer really wants to emphasize the importance of strategy, he or she may have tried “when to hit 12.” Far more players get this error. They mistakenly think all but 10 will fix a hand. This is simply not true. If you hit 3 and hit 15, you haven’t fixed your hand at all. You can’t win with 15 unless the dealer fails. So, if you want to hit 12, does this mean you have to hit 15? Of course not.
Players don’t have much trouble with the idea of hitting 12 vs 7 via Ace. This is a strong dealer’s upcards and since there’s less than a 1/3 chance of breaking through, hitting the 12 seems to make sense to most players. The problem arose with the dealer’s bust card. There are lots of players who insist on hitting this 12 vs bust card. The driving force is low probability of busting. However, there are only five cards that will actually raise a hand. And, getting to 17 or 18 doesn’t guarantee victory.
